This trek to the base camp of the world's fifth highest mountain (Makalu) is an outstanding trek in the eastern region of Nepal which offers a combination of rich culture heritage, unsurpassed beauty and biological diversity. The trek takes us from the humid lowlands of Tumlingtar on the Arun River, through one of the least frequented areas of Nepal which is populated by a wide cross-section of Nepali peoples with a diverse cultural background, to the base camp of Makalu (5000 m). The trail follows the beautiful Barun river valley in the Makalu Barun National Park, crossing Shipton Pass at 4127 m before arriving at Makalu Base Camp from where views of the south face of Makalu, as well as Everest (8,850m), Lhotse (8,516m), Chamlang (7,319m) and Baruntse (7,220m) are truly spectacular. As the trek moves into the higher mountains, we traverse distinct vegetation zones; from pristine forests of fir, birch and rhododendron in the sub-alpine zone, to the herbs, grasses and juniper shrubs of the alpine pastures. The area has a large variety of orchid, aromatic plants, oak, primrose and not least of all, 19 species of bamboo! The Arun valley is also a home of rare species of various birds found in Nepal with other various fauna like; red panda, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard, wild boar, marmot and langur monkey.
Anyone in good shape and has previous experience of trekking can make this fairly challenging trek anytime in between March to May and September to early December.
